See-Kan RC&D News

As you know, Spring River WRAPS (sponsored by See-Kan RC&D), Cherokee County Sheriff's Dept. and the Cherokee County Health Dept. co-sponsored local participation in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.  Three sites were established (Baxter Springs, Columbus and Galena) for the collection event on Sept. 25th

to reduce the availability of unused medications and provide the proper method for their destruction (by incineration as opposed to flushing).

We collected a total of 113 pounds...doesn't sound like much BUT considering this was our first public collection and that medication, individually, is light weight - that total should be viewed with optimism.  Topeka (the only results I've heard about) collected 171 pounds from a population of ~123,000 compared to our entire county population of a tad over 21,000...not too shabby!  This event has advanced awareness; we need to continue the

education.

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves and his staff were instrumental in the success of this collection.  Additional gratitude should be given to Jim Burton (City of Columbus and SR WRAPS Vice-Chairman) and Art Blick and his volunteers from the County's CERT team.

Take care,

Carl
